Affiliate marketing is a good passive income strategy that can
generate a six-figure annual revenue,
if, and only if done properly, and one of the substantial ways to achieve
this is to know what affiliate products you should, and should not, spend your
time and money promoting.

The ability to identify suitable affiliate products to
sell is something most online entrepreneur struggle with, especially at the
beginning stages.

Sometimes, in the search for satiable
affiliate offers, most
affiliate marketers join diverse affiliate networks to lay their hands on the
best eCommerce deals, which is the common practice for exploring available options, but it is not a wise approach in identifying marketable products or services.

It is good to ride on the wave of marketing options and opportunities, but when it becomes excessive it weighs down on your focus and initiative to spot-out profitable
products that might be buried in the heap.

Here are some careful steps to consider when choosing to
market affiliate products irrespective of the affiliate platform you may be registered with :

Often times affiliate marketers tend to overlook a vendor’s profile,
probably because the vendor’s product is featured on a reputable affiliate platform like, ClickBank, or
JVzoo affiliates, or maybe because it doesn’t matter. But the good news
is,
it does matter when it comes to
choosing
  a product.

It is crucial to run a quick background check on a product
vendor in terms of:

*Sales records : Total sales accumulated by the
vendor (the vendor’s accolades).

* Product antecedent : Earlier products manufactured
by the vendor.

* Review and ratings by third parties: People’s attitude
towards the vendor ( these persons could be YouTubers,
fans, social media followers and friends,
etc.).

Normally, a vendor’s JV page or sales page provides some of these information,
but to get a more in-depth
look at their background, your best bet could be searching them out on social media, or
visiting their personal website to get some details about their personality. This also gives you the chance to understand the attitude of other individuals (e.g. followers, subscribers, customers, etc) towards them (comments,

ratings,
  likes,
 etc).

A vendor’s reputation affects the demand rate of his or her product,
and a piece of the vendor’s personality also reflects greatly on the manufactured product, therefore
it is important to have some knowledge about who you are marketing for, to get your
audiences at ease to know that they are purchasing from a reliable source.

Before considering any affiliate product, it is important to carry out a survey to know if the product in question can actually provoke sales. The following issues must be considered, such as:

Is the product in high demand?

Demand is key, it doesn’t matter whether the product is new
or old,
as far as it is something useful
or reasonable for a targeted group of persons, or it is something needed for a
certain period of time. For instance, you can consider marketing automation software
and tools if you plan to render B2B services to online entrepreneurs,
web developers, and even affiliate marketers.
Also, currently the pandemic have led to the increase in health products,
sanitizers and masks, therefore selling affiliate products related to this
categories could be highly profitable.

What are people’s opinion about the product?

Like we established earlier,

reviews and ratings are important,

not only for a vendor’s profile, but for the product itself.
Some product vendors on affiliate networks are
startups,
  given the scenario,
these vendors may lack a reputable portfolio or
background, thus, in such a case, attention should be focused more on how well people
are receptive to their products. Social proofs gives direct credit to a product,
while it indirectly increases the vendor’s
reputation simultaneously. we shall discuss more on the effects of social proofs in a latter part of this post.

Are there competing offers on the product that could be a
more preferable choice?

Some products are duplicate of some kind, and a lot of
affiliate networks entertain products performing similar functions with another.
However, this is not a problem because duplicated products are often as a
result of competition (one vendor trying to stay relevant in a particular line
of production over the other), in such situation, it is best to weigh products
based on some of the survey tips mentioned above, that is,
 demand rate,

reviews or ratings, and vendor’s reputation. The result with the highest
percentage should favor your decision.

#3 Commission rates compared to Sales Price

Commission rates should be the heart of your decision making
as an affiliate marketer, because this is how you make money from your marketing efforts.
Most affiliate marketers make the mistake of promoting products with commission rate below 20%, especially those enthusiastic about the Amazon affiliate
program and CJ affiliate program.

30% or more should be the standard of your choice,
especially if you are going to be spending heavily on PPC advertising.

Commission rates should be calculated while considering the actual sales price,
 for
example,
if product “A” is selling for
$20 and it offers a commission rate of 50% and product “B” is selling for $50
and it offers a commission rate of 30%, in this case,
product A has the higher commission, but product
B offers a higher payout, because 50% of $20 is $10, while 30% of $50 is $15.
Therefore the better option would be product B.

Another example could be, product “A” is selling at $50 with
50% commission, and product “B” is selling at $60 with 50% commission.
Obviously, the commission rates are equal, but the payouts are different owing to
their respective sales price. Going by simple calculation, product A would have
a commission payout of $25, while product B would have a commission payout of $30.

The moral of the story is-
sometimes the increase in sales price affects
the increase in commission payouts, that is why it is necessary to calculate the
commission rate in relation with the price, and not just focusing on the
commission rate alone.

#4 Social proofs concerning the product

Earlier,
  we hinted on
the fact that social proofs directly credits a product, while it indirectly
increases a vendor’s reputation.

To expatiate, social proofs are what qualifies a product to
stay in demand, or rather, to present itself as being in demand, that is why
affiliate marketers are constantly beckoned to always add some testimonials and
opinions about affiliate products on their individual landing pages. This way,
prospects who haven’t used such product before would become allured in trying
it out.

Products with social proofs indirectly builds confidence in
a vendor’s delivery and experience, and it doesn’t really matter whether such
vendor is a startup or an expert, in as much as people are inclined to
purchasing such product or service, and they display positive attitudes towards
it on social media or blogs reviews, it immediately proves that such product
would be easy to sell as an affiliated member.

Social proofs are very important when it comes to choosing
affiliate products. It increases your chances of getting conversions.

#5 Available Discount offers & Free Trials

The product should have some form of “freemium” permit the word,
in order to look attractive and
to make it easy to sell.

This could be discount offers,
free trials, free delivery, bonus services,
etc. Affiliate marketers should not consider promoting
products that do not offer some sort of freemiums,
because it is counter-productive, and may reduce conversions

Aside reputation,

people like seeing the word “free”, it shows them that a vendor is more
concerned about their welfare,
  than
selling-out his product as quickly as possible. Besides that,
it also help to shift attention away from the
competition.
